“Don’t ever let somebody tell you…You can’t do something. Not even me. All right? You got a dream…You gotta protect it. People can’t do something’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period” – Christopher Gardner (Pursuit of Happyness)

Artist Statement

“The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers.” My goal for this project was to find different ways in which people can achieve their own American Dreams. Even though there is a concrete definition of what the “American Dream” is, it can be interpreted differently by different people. I used different images to demonstrate the different ways people can accomplish their own “American Dreams.”

Picture 1 – This picture combined with the note on top of the clock is a great way to start off this photoessay because a clock signifies the start of the day. In order to accomplish great things in life, you need to get up from bed and start chasing your dreams instead of continue to sleep.

Picture 2 – A picture of a basketball court with the sun shining in the background is motivational because at these times of the day when the sun is at that angle, people are typically not working hard, they are either beginning their day or ending it, but combined with the quote from Kevin Durant, this picture shows that hard work trumps everything in the world.

Picture 3 – This picture from the film Pursuit of Happyness is inspirational because of the way the dad is holding his two prized possessions, his son and his business. He is always on the move trying to make his life better for the two of them, and this picture shows that with him walking through the street trying to hold both of his possessions close.

Picture 4 – This picture was taken by myself on Park Ave of an aspiring guitarist and singer trying to raise some money. He had been unsuccessful, as the viewer can see inside the guitar case, there is no money in it. This does not faze him, however and he continues to play in a happy way. The sign in the background is also important to this image because it reminds us that sometimes if you are not having the best of days, success wise, life is still sweet, and you should enjoy a treat.

Pictures 5,6,7 – The focus on this collage is a farmer’s market. This man grows his own fruits and vegetables as a business and is trying to provide for his family by attending farmer’s markets. This is prevalent in Winter Park as well, because there is a farmer’s market every weekend, and the two smaller pictures are of the location, so the viewers can experience it for themselves if they ever wanted to explore a new experience. The colors in this picture pop, especially the man’s goods.

Pictures 8,9,10,11 – These pictures are all pictures of me growing up playing the game that I love so much. It is in chronological order with the earliest picture being on the left and the most recent being on the right. Through hard work and determination, I accomplished something that I wanted to ever since I was a kid, and that was to play college soccer. It is interesting to view what I look like in each photograph as I grew up through the years, but one thing has remained constant, and that is my love for the game of soccer.

Picture 12 – This picture is a representation of the future. The mansion combined with the lake view is an estate that I want to be able to purchase myself one day. This picture is an American Dream in itself. The composition of the water and the landscape around the house is magnificent, not to mention the mansion being the focus of the picture.
